Pack your bags, we’re going on a musical adventure! Shall we go by air (To Tame the Perilous Skies) or by ship (Down to the Sea in Ships)? Will we go for A Weekend in New York or farther afield to Crete (Dances from Crete)? Will we seek wisdom in the desert (A Cry from a Dry Land, the premiere of a new work by Denis Nassar)? Whatever the destination, the journey itself is the best part. Join us as we explore an exciting musical world.

The Calgary Wind Symphony has commissioned Denis Nassar to write a symphonic piece for their  concert on October 23rd “Oh, The Places We’ll Go!”. “I’m feel very honoured with the opportunity of working with the CWS and particularly with Dr. Jeremy Brown, I’ve always admired his work as a musician, professor and conductor. The concert program is amazing and I’m looking forward to this wonderful collaboration!” said Denis Nassar when talking about this project and his expectations.

In this piece Denis went back to his Brazilian musical background and rediscovered a vast universe of rhythms and dances that inspired him to write this piece. The exciting rhythms you will hear in this piece are typical of the North East in Brazil, a place that is known for the sertão (a very dry semi-arid region).

The people from the sertão have to face many challenges and because of that anyone would think that they would probably be a sad people marked by suffering. However, if you ever meet someone from there you will find out that it is quite the opposite, they are some of the most joyful people in Brazil, full of energy and hope. This characteristic of the North East region can be heard in their music as well which is quite energetic and joyful. In his piece Denis tried to capture this joyful and strong cry that come from “a dry land”.

Please join us with your family and friends for this amazing concert in the beautiful Rosza Center theatre in Calgary.
